The Argentine longboarder who represents Peru in the WSL, and who was part of the CT of the world tour in 2023, Matías Maturano, chose to represent Argentina in the Pan American surfing and ISA world championships, he himself reported on his social networks.

He does so, he said, with hopes of reaching Los Angeles 2028 where it is possible that longboarding will be included as an Olympic discipline.

“This decision is very important and I am excited about this new stage.
“I was born in Argentina, just like my parents. Although I grew up in Argentina, I developed as an athlete and surfer in Peru. The community and waves of Peru were fundamental in my development, and I will always be grateful for the constant support I have received from its people,” wrote Matías.

He added: “Recently, the Argentine Surfing Association offered me the opportunity to represent the country at the Pan American Surfing Championships in October in Punta Rocas. I have always dreamed of competing in Pan American and ISA World Championships, especially now that Longboard will be part of the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games (sic. - longboarding has not yet been confirmed as an Olympic discipline for Los Angeles 2028).”

He concluded: “I feel fortunate to have the support of fans from Peru, Argentina and around the world. I am proud to have represented Peru in events worldwide, despite never having had Peruvian nationality or a passport. Peru is a country that I love and carry in my heart; it is my home and the home of my family and friends. I will always be grateful for having been able to represent the colors of the Peruvian flag. However, it is time to live my dream and represent the country that selected me. I hope that everyone can understand, respect and support my decision.”

Maturano just placed fifth in the Lobitos LQS and is third in the WSL South America regional ranking with one stage remaining in Huanchaco this week.
