Max Torres won the SUP event at the Backdoor Shootout
One-two Latino with Sebastián Gómez taking second place
For the first time in history, a Puerto Rican won any of the Backdoor Shootout divisions today on day 1 of the event, in which the SUP and Longboard divisions typically take to the water.
Torres started the series well with a 4,63, which he backed up with a 3,25 with less than a minute to go. On his first wave, a solid one, he flew down, hit a roof, and executed a radical floater. On his second, he combined a carving maneuver with an attack.
Gomez's second place was almost a first because he had the best wave of the series, a 5,88, scored on a solid wave towards Pipe. He needed two points, which he couldn't get.
To close the Latin party, Jarita Gómez, also from Peru, placed fourth, surfing a good wave at Backdoor where she got a barrel but then the lip hit her knee and she had to abandon the series.
