Medina and Moore lead at Surf Ranch

With two waves left to surf, Slater would be missing out on the event final on his wave.

Brazilian Gabriel Medina and Hawaiian Carissa Moore lead the partial ranking of the first CT event on artificial waves, the Surf Ranch Pro, which has already completed two days of competition in Lemoore, California.

With all 54 surfers (36 men and 18 women) having surfed four waves each, the top eight men who will make it to the grand final are as follows:

And the female top 4 goes like this:

All athletes have two waves left to surf on Saturday and everything could change, although there are solid scores at the top.

Although things happen like Griffin Colapinto, sitting in 5,83th place, for example, needs only a 6,7 to get into the qualifying zone; Michel Bourez needs a 6,98, Connor O'Leary a 23, Sebastian Zietz (who is 6,03rd, needs a 28 forehand and has only one chance. Meanwhile, Jesse Mendes, who is 6,74th, could get into the final if he scores a XNUMX on a forehand. All this, of course, if nothing changes in the top eight.

The greatest surfer in history and inventor of the wave where the event is held, Kelly Slater, is missing out by one place, needing, if nothing changes, a 6,20 to knock Italo Ferreira out of contention.

Andino surfed very well, he wanted to take risks and he did it and he was one of the few who did this and did not get waves above 8 from the judges. When he got out of the water he was quite upset about it. Anyway, the Californian is fifth in the general classification. Photo: WSL/Cestari
Carissa Moore didn't feel any pressure and in her first two waves she got into first place in the partial ranking. She is in first place and all waves need excellent scores to dethrone her. Photo: WSL/Cestari

Meanwhile, among the women, things are more complicated for the runners-up to the finalists, all needing 8,10 or more, with Coco Ho in fifth, the closest.

What seems quite interesting for a championship with a pool and this Round Robin format is that the best in the ranking are already the best in the event. With the exception of Wade Carmichael and Willian Cardoso, the rest are all members of the top 10. Something similar happens among the women, the top 4 are members of the top 6.

One interesting constant throughout the day was that, with the exception of Slater's sky-high 8,5, no excellent scores were paid out without at least one high-risk maneuver. Another was that those who skipped the last section of the tube to do a maneuver received good scores (Smith, Medina and Toledo).

The action continues today in Lemoore.

The one below was the best wave of the event so far, Medina's 9,3:
