Medina clarified that he is in favor of vaccines and that he did not receive them due to scheduling conflicts
“The vaccine saves lives, it was my mistake not to have been able to schedule it,” he clarified in the face of controversy after announcing that he would miss Tahiti for not being vaccinated
The news that one of the most prominent athletes in Brazil and the world, Gabriel Medina, would miss the Tahiti stage due to not being vaccinated generated controversy especially in his country.
In the Estado de São Paulo newspaper alone, supporters made almost 5000 comments on the subject, many in favor and many against.
Medina had to explain: “The vaccine saves lives. It was my mistake not to have been able to schedule my training for this year’s challenges. I am focused on the world championship, but I will soon take mine. In the meantime, I am taking all the precautions and following the safety protocols.”
All Brazilian Olympic athletes were guaranteed a vaccine but Medina was unable to take his.
As reported by Stab a few days ago, there are other surfers on the tour who have chosen not to give it up for ideological reasons.
