Three-time world champion Gabriel Medina will return to competition at the Saquarema Challenger, which will take place from 1 to 8 November. Medina will compete as a wildcard and will therefore have a low seeding.

During the world circuit stage in Saquarema, the Brazilian crashed his board and was out of the water for a few weeks. Medina returned to surfing in Rio de Janeiro where he had a great time.

According to the tournament's seeding list, which DUKE had access to through the WSL regional office, the spots for the women's event have not been filled and 10 spots remain available (six late entries, two WSL wildcards and two from the event).

There are six surfers on the waiting list.

One of the assumptions that can be made about the lack of incentive due to the absence of surfers who have already managed to qualify for the challengers is that there are six surfers who are very far apart in the ranking and there are five who qualify.

Another new addition to the list is that Argentine Nacho Gundensen will be in a challenger tournament for the first time in his career, having entered as a substitute.
