Mexican Surfing Federation: “Let’s wait a little longer, please”

"The situation is very complex, but it becomes easy to decide when we see it from the point of view of solidarity, of awareness that there are much more serious problems than not surfing," they point out.

The Mexican Surfing Federation (FMS) asked its community to be more patient during the quarantine that has surfers out of the water in the country in a letter published yesterday on its social networks.

"The situation is very complex, but it becomes easy to decide when we look at it from the point of view of solidarity, from the awareness that there are much more serious problems than not surfing," they point out.

They make it clear that the problem is not that going surfing increases infections, but that people imitate surfers by leaving their homes and thus generating movement in society.

“We understand the feeling, because we see that the waves are excellent these days, even epic, and surfing for us is food for the soul, but we must be supportive and prudent,” they add, “Let's wait a little longer, please.”

They also point out that they have been in contact with the authorities but say: “No sports organisation should exert pressure to selectively lift bans when the social problem is much more serious than the sporting one.”

Finally, the authority appreciates compliance with the measures because “it benefits many people.”

Mexico was one of the last countries to ban surfing on its coasts and a few weeks after doing so, a swell hit Zicatela in which several locals went into the water.

Videos and photos of the incredible waves were leaked and, according to a source who spoke to DUKE, this led to stricter measures.
