Miguel Tudela's tubazo in Pipe made it into the top 10 finalists of The Winter Wave
The Peruvian made it to the final of one of the most prestigious events on the planet; he was surprised that Joaquín del Castillo's shot was not part of the list
The tube that Miguel Tudela got on November 16th at Pipe is one of the ten finalists of The Wave of Winter as determined by the highly respected panel of judges made up of Gerry Lopez, Pancho Sullivan, Shawn Briley and Shane Dorian, the North American website has just reported. Surfline.
Tudela got into a big bomb and went deep into the water that November day to emerge with the second wave of spit.
The film that also qualified was made by fellow Peruvian José Plaza.
The Punta Hermosa native celebrated the recognition on social media but stressed that he was surprised that Joaquín del Castillo's wave was not on the list: "It was the biggest tube on the heaviest day of the season," he wrote.
Del Castillo himself expressed himself along the same lines, citing Surfline in IG stories with question marks.
Joaquin caught the best wave of the day at the heaviest Pipe of the season on December 30th during the peak of the swell when only a few went into the water (see below).
The other 10 finalists are Jamie O'Brien, Liam O'Brian, Koa Smith, Koa Rothman, Joao Chumbo Chianca, Anthony Walsh, Mikey Bruneau and Torrey Meister.
The winner, who will be announced on March 12 in Honolulu, will receive $25.000. There will also be awards for wave of the decade, best female of the season overall, best season overall and breakout surfer.
