Miguel Tudela returns to competition at the Pipe Pro
“I'm back with a lot of desire,” said the Peruvian to DUKE, who spent almost four months without wearing lycra.
Miguel Tudela will return to competition after the Volcom Pipe Pro, a tournament that will take place between January 29 and February 10, the surfer himself announced on social media after passing the latest medical tests positively.
On October 2, while competing in the QS in the Philippines, the Peruvian worsened an injury he already had in the ligaments of his right knee, and on the 28th he underwent surgery. He dedicated the last few months to strengthening his leg and is now ready.
“I'm back with a lot of desire,” he told DUKE. He added: “I feel great, the timing is pretty good, the swell at Cabo Blanco was very important and these last few weeks are going to be the key to getting to Pipe at 100%.”
“I'm looking forward to it, but I'm a little scared. It's my first event (after my injury), in Pipe, which is a strong wave, but I'm really looking forward to it on one of my favourite beaches in the world, where I think I've had good results, both in free surfing and in the championship, but I think now it's time to get my act together and advance a couple more rounds,” added the Punta Hermosa native, whose best result in the tournament was 17th place in the last two editions.
Despite this, he has shone many times at Pipe, in the last edition he got a 9,43 in an epic bomb that could easily have been a 10. The Peruvian appears with a good pre-qualification, in the round of 64 surfers in the event that begins with 144 competitors.
These last two weeks are crucial, said Tudela: “The knee is 100% post-op but with 80% muscle mass; these last two weeks are going to be the most important.”
Commenting on how she made the most of her time away from the water, she said: “I spent the time training a lot and also focusing on things that I had put aside a bit in my personal life, but basically training hard to get my knee back. That was my priority during these months,” she said.
