Hawaiian Mike Stewart wants to become the first surfer in history to surf a second tube formed by waves, he declared in a talk given in Punta del Este on Thursday night at the third world presentation of his “Constructive Interference – The Ultimate Manifestation of Wave Energy.”
Among several points that the legendary bodyboarder and bodysurfer discovered after a life in the water and after studying it more closely during the pandemic, he mentioned that barrel waves form a second tube when the lip hits the water.
That is, when the lip falls hard, the rebound that hits the water generates a second tube and he declared, exclusively for the audience present, that one of his goals is to surf that tube.
Basically an extremely risky task because it breaks in front of a solid wave that has already broken.
At the conference, Stewart showed images of this second tube (see video below).
Stewart's discoveries, which begin with a vortex that is generated more frequently the more glassy and tubular the sea is, caught the attention of scientists, in the same way as his films of the foam that disappears on the shore, which he relates to black holes.
The audience at Chivipizza was extremely interested in what Stewart had to say, and the Hawaiian was extremely open to answering their questions.
His years in the tube have allowed him to share the “safe” place to abort a mission in a closed tube or that there is a “safe” chamber when a heavy tubular set breaks on your head and that you can duck to get through it without the wave catching you and making you pay.
