Mikey Redd hit the Pipe reef and was pulled unconscious from the water
The former winner of La ola del invierno was wearing a helmet, he is in ICU but is expected to make a full recovery; Peruvian Joaquín del Castillo was one of the first to arrive to rescue him
Former Winter Wave winner, Pipe and Backdoor specialist Mikey Redd O'Shaughnessy was rushed to the hospital after being pulled unconscious from the water by lifeguards and surfers yesterday at Backdoor, local journalist Shannon Quirk reported on her Instagram.
The Hawaiian fell into his wave and went straight to the reef; two waves passed over him before rescue arrived.
According to Billy Kemper, the helmet had two dents on both sides of the skull, "the way things look, he wouldn't be breathing if it weren't for the helmet."
In the photos, Peruvian Joaquín del Castillo can be seen actively participating in the rescue. On social media, the Punta Hermosa local celebrated that Mikey is safe. His friends José Plaza and Alonso Correa congratulated him publicly.
The Hawaiian is in intensive care and is expected to make a full recovery. In a post by Hawaiian lifeguards, Redd thanks all those who saved his life (see below).
