Dominic Barona from Ecuador has just been crowned champion of the ALAS Pro Tour 2024 after securing a place in the grand final of the Surf City El Salvador ALAS Pro which is now concluding in El Sunzal.
The Ecuadorian, who finished third in the ranking in El Salvador, had taken advantage after Marcela Machado and Rubiana Brownell (leader and vice-leader) were left out of the event.
Once the semis arrived, there were four surfers with chances left: Ella, Lucía Indurain, Catalina Zariquiey and Sofía Artieda.
In the first, Barona won the semi 1 and went to the final with Barthelmess. Indurain and Zariquiey were left out, leaving only Artieda with mathematical chances of reaching her only if he won the event.
But the young Peruvian girl was knocked out of the event in the next heat and thus said goodbye to her chances of winning the championship at the age of 14.
Barona has won the tour several times, the last time in 2001.
“I am happy and grateful, this title is for my brother, for Isra. After a year, I am here winning for him with my whole family here and my mom accompanying me from home; my dad and everyone. Thiaguito is here with me. Thanks to the people who believed in me and motivated me to compete again and that I had to be here and I continue to do so for my brother, for myself, for the people who trust and long live Latin surfing,” said Barona after winning and celebrating.
