Last Saturday it was determined that Mimi Barona and JJ López won the ALAS tour and therefore became the first athletes eligible to qualify for surfing in Santiago 2023. Does this ensure that they both qualify there? No.

And the reason is that The classification criteria establishes that the last test in the hierarchy to qualify is precisely the ALAS, with the 2023 World Surfing Games first and the Pan American Surfing Games second, which everything indicates will take place in Santa Catalina, Panama.

The other important issue is that each country will be able to bring a maximum of two shortboarders per gender (16 in total compete per gender).

These are the amounts that classify by event:
ISA World Surfing Games 2023 (El Salvador)
Shortboard – 5 men and 5 women

PASA Surfing Games 2023 (ranking by division)
Shortboard – 8 men and 8 women

The following happens: If two other Venezuelans or two other Ecuadorians manage to be eligible for these two events, of higher hierarchy, they would displace JJ and Mimi Barona and the next athlete in the ranking eligible for the test would go.

It could also happen that JJ and Mimi themselves obtain an eligible position in the two aforementioned events (Pan American surfing or ISA World Championship in El Salvador) and in that case the ALAS position becomes vacant.

This happened for Lima 2019, at the men's level Bryan Pérez from El Salvador qualified, who ended up winning the bronze medal in the event and was 52nd in the ALAS ranking.
