Mimi Barona runner-up in South Africa
The Ecuadorian achieved her best result of the year and entered the top 20 in the QS ranking
Ecuadorian Dominic Barona achieved her best result of the year today in Port Elizabeth, South Africa, after placing second in the Volkswagen SA Open of Surfing, QS that awarded 3000 points and took place in half-meter waves at Pipe Beach, in Pollock Beach.
With this result, Barona added 2250 points to the ranking, reaching 6425, which will show her among the top 20 in the world rankings when the WSL updates the ranking.
On the way to the final, the Ecuadorian went through five series in which she beat CT member Silvana Lima twice, in round 3 and in the semis. She also got rid of former CT Chelsea Tuach in round 2 and Australian talent Philipa Anderson in the quarterfinals.
For her part, Costa Rican Leilani McGonagle obtained a respectable fifth place, which gave her 1260 points that will also put her in the top 20 of the QS ranking.
Meanwhile, Peruvian Sofia Mulanovich came very close to making it through her third round and thus placed ninth. The 3 points she obtained are her best result of the year, which made her climb 900 places in the ranking, jumping from 34th to 104th place.
