Nathan Florence broke his back in wipe out in Jaws

He suffered a compression fracture in the t12 vertebra that will keep him out of the water for six weeks, if he does not manage to “super heal,” as he said.

Hawaiian surfer Nathan Florence broke his back while surfing at Jaws, he said on Instagram.

“Turns out I have a compression fracture in my t12, meaning I broke my back,” he wrote, adding, “The fracture is as good as things can get for the situation, no disc damage, nothing out of place, no pressure on the spine, no surgery needed; have the deadlifts to thank for that, it’s just a bone that needs to heal, unless I can super heal which I’m super confident about, milk and corn are known to do wonders.”

The injury occurred in a forced drop that the Hawaiian suffered in a bomb at Jaws on January 11. He said that during the wipeout he felt a strange "crack" and went to the hospital to get checked out; they did X-rays and everything came back fine.

Upon returning to Oahu, he is believed to have had an MRI which gave him the most negative verdict.

Florence is on the main roster for the Eddie event expected to take place this Sunday, so it is already known that the substitutes will be used.
