Netflix tried to buy the World Surf League but fell short on the price

Some executives believe that because of the size of the platform, Netflix wants to find lesser-known sports, turn them into big franchises and generate new events.

The series and film giant, Netflix, tried to buy the World Surf League last year, 2021, but the two parties did not reach an agreement due to the price offered and asked, The prestigious Wall Street Journal reported yesterday.

According to the note, streaming companies are trying to diversify and have bought the rights to broadcast live sporting events. Apple TV, for example, bought some football matches and Netflix wanted to do the same with tennis and, in the process, buy the entire WSL.

“Some Netflix executives believe that because of the platform’s size, Netflix can find lesser-known sports and turn them into big franchises and generate new events,” the WSJ report said.

They point out that the documentary series Drive to Survive, for example, has brought more fans to Formula 1 racing.

The WSL is owned by billionaire Dirk Ziff, who bought it in 2012 from the group of surfers who founded it.

According to reports in the corridors of the California offices of the surfing industry, the tycoon has lost money on his investment.

Its newest CEO, Erik Logan, said in several recent interviews that in 2022 the results were several percentage points better than before the pandemic and that “the sport is growing.”
