New Zealand will travel with just two surfers, Paige Hareb and Saffi Vette, to the Surf City ISA World Surfing Games in El Salvador from May 29 to June 6, Surfing New Zealand reported on its website.

Former world tour member Paige Hareb and young standout Saffi Vette will be in La Bocana and El Tunco trying to make it into the top seven eligible spots for Tokyo 2020.

Ella Williams, who is provisionally qualified for Tokyo and could lose her place to her two compatriots, chose not to travel for “health and safety reasons,” the statement said.

Billy Stairmand did the same, also qualified along with others because they chose to compete in Australia in the WSL stages that take place at the end of June and, in the case of participating in El Salvador, they would have to go through two weeks of quarantine upon arrival in Australia, which would shorten their time to be part of the qualifiers for the Challengers.

As there will be no other Kiwi men in El Salvador, this guarantees Stairmand a place in Tokyo 2020.

The provisional regional qualifiers are not required to be in El Salvador, unlike what happens with those who qualify through the CT, who to go to Tokyo 2020 must compete in La Bocana and El Sunzal, clarified to DUKE from the ISA.
