The 2028 Los Angeles Olympic surfing event will be held at Lower Trestles, the ISA has just confirmed in a press release.

It is ruled out that it will be in Huntington, which was the other option.

"Following an extensive review process with the Organising Committee of the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games (LA28), ISA President Fernando Aguerre expressed his enthusiasm for the confirmation of Trestles as the Surfing Host City at the 2028 Olympic Games. This key decision was validated by both the ISA and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Executive Board, reinforcing the importance of the playing field in Olympic surfing, following the success of Teahupo'o for Paris 2024," the ISA said in a statement.

And he adds: "As Southern California's premier surfing beach and one of the best high-performance waves in the world, Trestles provides the ideal playground for surfing at LA28. Located in San Clemente, Trestles has been a go-to venue for elite surfers from around the world for decades, hosting numerous high-level international competitions as well as U.S. national championships."

Meanwhile, ISA President Fernando Aguerre said, “After the incredible success of surfing at Teahupo'o, and after speaking with many of the world's top athletes, we knew any option for Los Angeles had to have top-performing waves, and there's no doubt that place is Trestles.”

He added: “We want to thank the LA28 leadership team and the International Olympic Committee for their understanding and support in providing the best possible conditions for the athletes. This decision reinforces the current trend of holding Olympic Surfing on iconic ocean waves. The perfect peak of Lowers offers a high-performance wave unlike any other in Southern California. We are very excited to see the best in the world compete for Olympic glory on its venerated round rocks.”

Being a state park, early indications indicated that Huntington, not Lowers, would be the winner. But it seems the organizers chose to navigate the logistical challenge to favor sporting interests.
