After day 5, Australia is the sole leader of the youth world championship

France follows closely behind, then Brazil, Japan and the United States in that order; Spain is eighth, Argentina tenth and Peru eleventh.

After the fifth day, presumably the penultimate day of competition, the Australian surfing team is the partial leader of the ISA Junior World Championships being held on Macumba Beach, Rio de Janeiro.

The Australians have 10 surfers still in the event and the French, who are close behind, also have fewer points than those who have already been eliminated from the first mentioned.

The Brazilian locals are third with nine competitors still left in the event and the partial podium is closed by Japan, also with nine competitors still left in the tournament.

The United States, Hawaii and Portugal, which follow in the ranking in that order, have eight competitors left.

And Spain, which is in eighth position, has seven surfers reaching a maximum possible score of 8048.

These eight nations stand apart from the rest, as New Zealand is in ninth place with 6500 points and five competitors left.

The podium, everything indicates, will be decided between the first eight nations mentioned.

In addition to Spain, other Spanish-speaking countries that appear strong are Argentina at 10, Peru at 11 and Costa Rica at 14.

The event is expected to end tomorrow, Friday, November 1st.
