The IOC has banned transgender athletes from participating in Olympic events, it announced today in a press release.

“The policy explains that, for all disciplines in the sports program of an IOC event, including the Olympic Games, for both individual and team sports, eligibility for any female category is limited to biological women,” the statement said.

The article quotes President Kirsty Coventry as saying: “As a former athlete, I strongly believe in the right of all Olympic athletes to participate in fair competition. The policy we have announced is based on science and has been developed by medical experts. In the Olympic Games, even the smallest margins can mean the difference between victory and defeat. It is therefore absolutely clear that it would not be fair for biological males to compete in the women's category. Moreover, in some sports, it simply would not be safe.”

He added: “All athletes should be treated with dignity and respect, and should only undergo one medical examination in their lifetime. Clear information about the process and available counseling, along with expert medical advice, should be provided.”
