“Over time, Hawaii will stop looking like Hawaii.”
Native Hawaiian studies professor Puali'i Rossi says of the massive land purchases by Zuckerberg, Bezos, Winfrey, and others; the Meta native just bought 962 more hectares.
“Over time, Hawaii will stop looking like Hawaii,” said Native Hawaiian studies professor Puali'i Rossi of Kauai Community College, citing the massive amount of land that mainland billionaires have acquired on the islands in recent years, Wired magazine reported in a story published yesterday.
“Are we really thinking about what this island will be like in 100 years?” he asks.
The comment comes in light of Mark Zuckerberg's expansion of his land on Kauai this week, from 962 hectares to more than 2300 hectares, which the CEO of Meta spent a total of more than $300 million; the last purchase is estimated to have been worth more than $60 million.
The problem was that part of Zuckerberg's land is located on what some locals say is an ancient Hawaiian burial ground.
Zuckerberg's purchase, which has brought investment and provided jobs to hundreds or thousands of people, has also inflated rental prices, making it extremely difficult for many island residents to live on the islands.
He is joined by the lands purchased by the famous Oprah Winfrey, Jeff Bezos of Amazon, Larry Ellison, CEO of Oracle, Marc Benioff, CEO of Salesforce, among others.
