Paris 2024 Organizing Committee chooses Tahiti as host of surfing event

Favorable wave conditions during the date of the event were key to making the decision; now it remains for the IOC to approve

The executive committee of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games has chosen Tahiti to host surfing's second participation in the world's largest multi-sport event, the organizing committee announced Thursday.

According to them, the reasons for choosing Polynesia were the best waves, the chance to host the Olympics 24 hours a day, and the benefits of the impact of Paris 2024 being felt even in the heart of the Pacific.

With this, Biarritz, Lacanau, La Torche and Hossegor-Seignosse-Capbreton have been ruled out for now.

The decision is still pending approval by the International Olympic Committee, which must first accept surfing as a sport at the Games.

If it happens, at 15700 kilometres away, it would be the furthest Olympic event from its home venue in the history of the games.

Temporary modular homes would be used as villas for the 48 surfers (a request was made to increase the number of places by four and four).

“We have had the pleasure of working closely with the Paris 2024 leadership team on this process of selecting a host venue for the surfing competitions at the Paris 2024 Games. The five bids were all excellent and highly regarded surfing destinations, but Tahiti was truly exceptional in offering our athletes and our sport spectacular conditions for optimal competitions,” said Fernando Aguerre, ISA President in a statement.

"For us, Tahiti represents the authenticity of our sport and the ISA's mission to celebrate the unique culture and lifestyle of surfing, while remembering the long history and heritage of our sport from its Polynesian origins," he added.

Meanwhile, ISA Athletes’ Commission Chair Justine Dupont (FRA) said: “All the athletes I have spoken to are super excited about Tahiti’s bid to host Olympic Surfing at Paris 2024. The world-famous Teahupo’o waves are revered among surfers around the world and will bring an unprecedented level of attention and excitement to the Games. Athletes are thrilled that our input has such a strong say in the bid. Our voices are being heard and shaping the future trajectory of our sport through Tokyo 2020, Paris 2024 and beyond.”
