Peruvian surfers dominated the historic debut of Pan American surfing at home, winning three golds, three silvers and one bronze in what was a turning point in the sport.
A day of solid and perfect waves in Punta Rocas consecrated the first Pan American medal winners in history, two of them setting foot in Tokyo 2020, Lucca Mesinas and Daniella Rosas, both from Peru.
The day was a roller coaster of emotions, with six of the eight podiums awarded taking place consecutively.
A huge crowd, mostly Peruvian, trembled first at the sight of three silver medals, as Izzi Gómez (COL) defeated Vania Torres, Giorgio Gómez (COL) did the same against Tamil Martino and Chloe Calmon defeated María Fernanda Reyes.
But everything turned around in the final longboard series, when Piccolo Clemente added 18,9 to beat Uruguayan Julián Schweizer.
Then everything continued well for the Incas: Daniella Rosas defeated Mimi Barona and Lucca Mesinas did the same with Lele Usuna.
Both finals had to wait for the judges for the final exchanges. A good combination of maneuvers by the Ecuadorian received just over four points, when she needed six and Usuna, needing 7,5, received 7,1.
Then came the medal ceremony, which was a novelty for surfing: unhindered, fluid and with impeccable protocol.
The eight medals were awarded, the eight anthems were played and the Peruvian fans celebrated loudly. The President of Peru, Martín Vizcarra, presented the medals to the podium of the longboard and open men.
