Peru will have its team in the Backdoor Shootout for the first time in history

The Tubos Surf School team, 100% Inca, will be in the prestigious competition next month


The Tubos Surf School team made up of Álvaro Malpartida, Gabriel Villarán, Miguel Tudela, Joaquin del Castillo and Cristobal de Col will be the protagonist of the historic debut of a purely Peruvian team in the prestigious Backdoor Shootout.

“What an honor,” wrote Miguel Tudela on his Instagram, where he posted a photo of the invitation to the event. He added: “Peru will be part of one of the most important events at Pipeline.”

“We have been looking for the opportunity for a few years and we were just able to get it,” they told DUKE from Tubos. “A place magically opened up and we were there. In addition, there is a relationship between Peru and Hawaii that has been going on for a long time.”  decades. That was the decisive letter for them to let us in," they added.

Regarding the high cost of registration, they said: “It is expensive but the boys deserve to be there. That is their place and we are very happy that we were able to get it. Everything is possible.”

The competition, which takes place in January at Pipeline, pits the world's best surfing teams against each other, sharing the water at Pipeline for several sessions. After several sessions and tubes, a winning team and surfer are chosen.

The winter wave was surfed during several editions of the event, last year it was Keito Matsuoka and in the 2017 edition it was Koa Rothman's turn.
