Peruvian Miguel Tudela will represent athletes before the ISA ahead of Tokyo 2020
The ISA created its first commission of surfers, the Peruvian is one of the six representatives at a global level
Peru's Miguel Tudela is one of the debuting members of the International Surfing Association's first ever athletes' commission ahead of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.
According to the ISA in a statement, the body, which is led by the multi-faceted Justine Dupont of France, aims to ensure that all athletes' opinions are heard at the highest level of governance in surfing, SUP and all surf-related disciplines.
The rest of the members are: Dylan Lightfoot from South Africa, Alana Nichols from the United States, Masatoshi Ohno from Japan, Casper Steinfath from Denmark and Ella Williams from New Zealand.
Steinfath's presence in this group is striking, since the SUPist is one of the vice-presidents of the ISA, and the group's role is to represent the athletes in front of the executive committee. Let's say that the Dane has one foot on each side of the counter.

These are the tasks of the newly created group:
-Represent the rights and interests of athletes before the ISA Executive Committee.
-Ensure that the opinion of athletes is heard at the highest level of governance of Surfing, SUP, and all surf-related disciplines.
-Proactively consider and advise the ISA on athlete-related matters.
-To provide current and past international athletes with the opportunity to contribute to the continued development, evolution and growth of the sport of Surfing, StandUp Paddling and all surfing related disciplines.
- Liaise with the Athletes' Commission, the International Olympic Committee and other sports organisations to enable the exchange of information and research.
“We will listen carefully to the advice of athletes and take their interests into account when making important decisions,” ISA President Fernando Aguerre said of the newly created group.
For her part, Dupont said: “The commission will be diligent and meticulous in ensuring that we passionately represent the vision and interests of athletes of all genders, disciplines, and nationalities. We want to continue the positive growth of Surfing and keep the sport on track for a strong debut at Tokyo 2020.”
