Peru celebrated hard today and yesterday at one of the most symbolic beaches of Brazilian surfing, Maresias, winning two of the four trophies that were up for grabs and one of the two titles that were decided.

Sol Aguirre and Raúl Ríos took home the cup in the junior pro competition that held its penultimate stage of the WSL South American circuit and Piccolo Clemente was crowned South American longboard champion once again.

In addition, Clemente was runner-up in the stage, as was Mafer Reyes, and Chilean Estela Lopez placed third in the women's youth pro category.

The victory gave Raul Rios the lead of one of the most competitive South American circuits in history. However, nothing is certain, as even ninth in the ranking he has a mathematical chance of winning it next weekend in Mancora, where the last stage of the year takes place.

“I am very happy because I am training hard for this to happen. It is my second final and in the first I finished second, so I wanted to win,” said Ríos to the WSL Latin America press department. The Peruvian, who is coming off a top 10 finish in the ISA world championship, added: “I was very focused and I feel very happy because everyone is surfing very well. I focused on connecting with the sea and I was able to win (…) Mánocra is my beach, it is where I live and I am going to give everything to be champion there,” he concluded.

Sol Aguirre, for her part, referred to the fact that she has not achieved any results this year and that things finally worked out in this tournament: “God is great and I know that with each fall one gets up stronger. Losing a lot taught me to never give up because God has a path for all of us.”

The victory gave the Peruvian the chance to get into second place, which qualifies South America for the WSL youth world championship in Taiwan.

Only Brazilian Julia Duarte can surpass Sol Aguirre in her goal of reaching the World Cup, and for that to happen she must win and Sol must not be in the final, the WSL reported.

On the other hand, reaching the semi-finals gave Piccolo Clemente another South American title.

In the women's longboard division, Mafer Reyes took the runner-up position.

Finally, the young goofy footer, Estela López achieved her best result in the youth pro, placing third.

Sol Aguirre dominated in Maresias, a Brazilian surfing capital that had to bow down to the young Peruvian.
Piccolo Clemente is once again the best on the continent.
