But for the first time in the ISA championship that he had been seeking all his life, Mafer Reyes and Lucas Garrido Lecca placed sixth and Peru achieved a historic second place as a team.

Peru's Piccolo Clemente claimed his first International Surfing Association world championship title today in Biarritz, France, after completing a marathon event in which he ruined the local party and climbed to the top of the podium.

Throughout the event, Edouard and Antoine Delpero were the most outstanding and reached the final as the big favourites with a French fan base behind them. But Piccolo, who had never won this tournament before, entered the grand final inspired and scored 17,17 (9,83 + 7,7).

Antoine Delpero came close, scoring 17,17 but it wasn't enough, Edouard did 16,90 and the only one who was far away was Cole Robbins who placed fourth and guaranteed the American place in Lima 2019.

Piccolo's result guaranteed him a spot in the Pan American Games as the top seed but occupying the Peruvian slot (this is why Robbins qualified as the best American).

The other two Peruvians who were still alive, Lucas Garrido Lecca and María Fernanda Reyes, were placed sixth, giving the Peruvians a historic second place in the overall team standings.

Reyes' place was guaranteed at the Lima 2019 Pan American Games using Peru's slot. The American slot went to Brazilian Chloe Calmón, who, by having guaranteed herself, opens a place for a Pan American longboarder (next in the ranking after Chilean Constanza Fernández).
