Poolside reflections with Cali Muñoz: “I would like to go back, you want to catch more waves”

Part 2 of the post-Corona Lay Days interview series at the Surf Ranch, this time with the Costa Rican: “I thought I would never be able to go because of the prices, I had never been invited, and what’s more, I had even bought a raffle ticket once to see if I could win a pass.”

Costa Rican Carlos Muñoz was surely the one who surfed the most waves at Corona Lay Days, which took place at the Surf Ranch on December 15. He says he is still bitter about not having completed a single CT 2 right, the one he tubes all the time, but if you watch the 25 minutes of video that features him with Lucca and Jhony, he looks very active.

So much so that when the day ended the Surf Ranch staff gave him the award for the best wave surfed that day.

Carlos received the news that he was going to the ranch when he was in the middle of terror week, after having lost in Haleiwa and watching the event from the outside, hoping that those who suited him would win.

When it all happened, it turned into the best celebration possible, at Kelly's ranch, with friends and the best of deals.

Below, Cali reviews the experience.

What was your reaction when you were told you were invited to Kelly's pool?
When they called me I was in pretty low spirits because it was the week I was competing in Haleiwa, where I didn't do so well.

It was like a consolation prize, it was a mixed blessing, because I've always wanted to go there and I thought I would never be able to go because of the prices, I had never been invited, and what's more, I had even bought a raffle ticket once to see if I could win a pass to the Surf Ranch (laughs)... I was very happy that they invited me!

What did you think after surfing some waves? What caught your attention?
How perfect! The truth is that you always learn when you are surfing and being in a pool it is something different from the sea because everything is different, the water, the texture, you had to surf in cold water but what caught my attention the most is how you can choose the waves, that advanced technology, the CT 2 is my favorite because it is a pure tube.

What is it that people don't know about that pool that you only realize once you go there?
The way it breaks, sometimes you imagine it as if it were the sea, and when you get there you start to see a lot of variations and you have to change to surf as if you were in the sea.

The wave breaks completely differently, it always sucks you in and you have to surf cleaner, it is quite complicated to surf if you want to surf it well.

What was your best wave there like?
It was a left that I barreled long, long, long and then I did some cuts, and I still didn't finish the whole wave. Lefts were the only ones you can complete from start to finish.

On the right-handers I stayed with the spine, I was able to surf it in two steps, in the front part and after having fallen, when someone released the wave, I surfed the bottom part.

How many times would you come back?
I would go back (laughs), I would like to go back, you are left wanting to catch more waves and then when you watch the video you think that you could have surfed much better. So yes, if I had friends with the money to do it, it would be great to share it with them.
