Since Thursday, the officials of the organization of the Lima 2019 Pan American Games carried out something historic for competitive surfing: They prohibited the entry of people who are not competitors and who are not supposed to surf during that time.
According to information provided to DUKE by the organization and a local surfer, official training sessions scheduled by the countries that go into the water begin at nine in the morning.
At the corresponding time, the athlete who goes into the water is given an official rashguard. Anyone who does not have one cannot enter. If someone enters from the Explosibles side, to the south, or Kontiki, to the north, they are removed from the water by the water patrol personnel.
Thus, the abundant waves of Punta Rocas are divided among a few throughout the day.
There are a total of 82 competitors occupying 88 competition spots (six repeat categories) and 20 of them do not use the waves as much because they are SUP racing competitors.
So for all these days of waves and training, Punta Rocas is dedicated to only 68 surfers.
On several occasions competitors of different competitive levels have complained about how difficult it is to practice in certain waves, Pipeline being the best example, which is not the case at Punta Rocas these days.
