As he himself says, with time, consistency, humility, respect and a good level of surfing, Franco Portocarrero found the formula to earn a place in the Cabo Blanco lineup and take home some great tubes.

This clip was filmed during three days of northerly swell that arrived in Peru a few days after Jaws and the rest of the big waves in Hawaii were working.

Three days in which the Peruvian locals got their fill because it was the first solid swell of the season.

In the following paragraphs, Franco talks about the video but also about what it is like to gain a place in what he calls the “Mecca of Peruvian surfing.”

How would you introduce your new video?
In the video you will be able to see three minutes of pure tubes in Cabo Blanco, surfed during the first official flood of the season, between December 7 and 10.

What I try to convey in the video is that people can somehow connect with what the essence of surfing good tubes truly is and everything that this entails; total happiness!

Cabo Blanco is a temple, how do you feel when you are there and the waves are pumping?
Cabo is the mecca of Peruvian surfing, the best surfers in the country wait all year to ride it. Once you are there, your mood changes, the beach scenery, the local people, the food, watching the  tremendous wave show, being with your feet, the good vibe of being in the north, all this makes us call it EMLDM (The Best Place in the World).

How was the bank during these floods?
I've been running Cabo for quite a while, and it seems to me that this first flood was the one I saw with the most sand. In general, this year 2020 there has been a sand phenomenon in a large part of the Peruvian coast, which resulted in many waves breaking like they hadn't done in many years.

What's the secret to finding a good one there?
Playing with “antitimings” (laughs).

I actually think that anyone can get a good wave there as long as you have the right level. But there is a difference between being lucky and being lucky.  the goodness and that you really get the wave in the lineup.

For that to happen, I think there are three key points you need to have: consistency, respect and humility. I have been surfing there for more than 12 years and it was definitely not easy in the first few years. Only in recent years have I felt more confident and it is easier for me to find the big tube, always waiting for your turn with respect.

From this December flood, which was the best wave?
My best wave was the third in the video at 0.31 seconds. It was a wave that  A friend of mine fell while dropping at the point and I turned around and hit him with everything, I didn't get out of the tube but it was the best trip and view of all.

But in general, I remember the two hits in the late game on Monday the 7th. One by Carlos Mario going down without hands in the backside and from there another wave by Cristobal standing high.

Which was the worst?
The aerial that I didn't get (laughs).

What was the most tense moment in the water?
Cabo is internationally known for its strong level of localism. On the second day there was a foreigner who speared one of my friends with a pipe and almost decapitated him… Things got heated in the water and he was eventually thrown off the beach.

You were in the waves with an anklet, what happened to you?
It was a boot; a few days before in Lima, while I was giving classes, the board fell on my nail and broke in two. Fortunately, it was on my back leg (laughs).

Are there more norths coming? Are you going back north?
Right now I'm here until the end of the month, enjoying my family and the good northern vibe. I hope there's one more tube to run before I leave.
