Study: QS has distributed more than half of its points in bad wave events
Only 13%, both female and male, participated in events with good to epic waves
More than half of the points awarded in the men's and women's QS in 2018 were given out in tournaments held in bad to average waves, revealed a study carried out by DUKE that evaluated each of the 72 stages already completed.
On the other hand, only 12,5% (19.500) of the points were awarded in good to epic waves and 32% (50.500) in waves between average and good.
If a distinction is made by sex, the most disadvantaged in the quality of waves in the QS itinerary have been the women who already have fewer events and fewer points to get into the top six when they enter the CT.
Of the 64.500 points that have been distributed, 37.500 (58%) were awarded in events with bad to average waves, 18.000 (28%) were awarded in average to good waves and only 9000, 14%, were awarded in events with good to epic waves.
The situation for men is better, but not that much: Of the 90.500 points distributed, 47.500 (52%) were given out in bad to average waves, 32.500 (36%) in average to good waves and the rest, 10.500 (12%) in good to epic waves.
The maxim holds true for the men's competition that none of the events with the highest points awarded, the 6000 and 10.000, were held in good to epic waves, but rather the opposite, only one 6000 was held in average to good waves (the Burton Automotive Pro in Newcastle which had a good swell at the start although the conditions were closer to average than good). In other words, the 32000 points awarded at the US Open, the Ballito Pro, the Chiba Open and the Sydney Pro were distributed in bad to average waves.
On the other hand, all the tournaments that had epic waves did not distribute more than 3000 points.
Among the ladies, the 6.000m at Los Cabos, which this year in particular had a very powerful south swell, was the exception to the rule as the other 6000m (Florida, Sydney, Oceanside and Newcastle) had poor to average conditions.
The Newcastle event is one of the few that varies on a 2 to 1 scale for the ladies because, as is often the case, the competition was female on days when the waves had already gone down.

How to build the scale
The three values taken into account are:
1- Bad to regular waves
2- Regular to good waves
3- Good to epic waves
The average number of waves during the event days is also taken into account. A tournament may end with very few waves and there may have been good days in the previous days; based on this monitoring, the average is calculated and the final number for each tournament is determined.
