17-year-old Raúl Ríos won yesterday's return of the Cabo Blanco invitational classic, which took place over two days with a perfect and consistent wave break.

His victory will go down in the history books as he becomes the youngest surfer in history to win the tubular classic in northern Peru. Previously, 16-year-old Lucca Mesinas had reached a final, but there is no record of a young surfer winning the tournament.

Ríos added 19 points to leave him in the lurch for a good part of the grand final. Then, the legendary David Fiorani came close with a 9,5 (needing another 9,5), but he couldn't find it.

Gustavo Swayne came in third place, Ivo Berenguel in fourth, Toni Pedraglio in fifth, and Herbert Mulanovich in sixth.

“This is the first championship I have competed in (here), the first final and the first time I have won and I am so happy,” said the youngster at the awards ceremony. “Cabo Blanco is for me one of the best beaches in the world and above all, beating all of them who are masters who hit some great tubes… Thank you, I am simply grateful and very happy about everything,” he added.

Rios began his campaign at trials by winning his heat and once in the main event he also won all four heats he entered.

However, his best performance was in the decision after coming out of a barrel and making a good maneuver that was worth 10 points.

The rest of the categories were won by Juan Diego Ríos, in junior, Boris Salas, in Bodyboard and Eduardo Coquis, in Masters.
