Record number of athletes to compete in the 2020 AmpSurf ISA World Para Surfing Championship
The action will begin on March 11th at La Jolla Shores
Special coverage presented by the International Surfing Association
A record 140 athletes from 24 countries will compete in the AmpSurf ISA World Para Surfing Championship from March 11-15, the fifth edition of the world championship of adaptive surfing, the ISA announced in a press release.
The official number of participants and full teams will be announced once the Para Surfing classification review is completed by March 11.
Nine former world champions have already confirmed their presence at the championship taking place in La Jolla Shores: Bruno Hansen (DEN), Mark 'Mono' Stewart (AUS), Aitor Francesena (ESP), Antony Smyth (RSA), and Alana Nichols (USA), Ann Yoshida (HAW), Samantha Bloom (AUS), Melisa Reid (ENG), and Victoria Feige (CAN).
Of the 140 registered participants, 42 women appear on the list, which is five times higher (if their registrations are confirmed) than the record number of women established in 2018.
Name change from surfing adapted to Para Surfing goes hand in hand with the intentions of the International Surfing Association to make it part of the Santiago 2023 Parapan American Games, a formal request that the ISA has made to Panam Sports.

Each of the divisions contested at the event will crown men and women world champions, with a maximum of eight men and eight women per team.
Some of the changes made for the 2020 event include that the Waveski division, which previously awarded points toward the overall team ranking, will this year become a standalone invitational event, the AmpSurf ISA International Waveski Invitational.
Although this event will not count towards the overall team ranking due to limited team universality, it will showcase the incredible talent of the adaptive waveskiing community with the aim of inspiring other athletes to take up the sport. Also, as a reflection of its continued commitment to the discipline, the ISA will crown World Champions for the division.
“The ISA is proud to continue to provide a world-class platform for physically challenged surfers. These are elite athletes who deserve a stage on which to shine,” said ISA President Fernando Aguerre. “Under the ISA’s leadership, Para Surfing has reached new corners of the world, enriching the lives of everyone it touches. We look forward to continuing our hard work until Para Surfing reaches the ultimate sporting stage at the Paralympic Games.”
