Renzo Zazzali: “They say it was the biggest wave ever ridden in Pico Alto up to that time”
A juicy account of a historic swell that took place in Peru in 2003 by one of the most experienced big riders in the country; “I had never seen the sea so big,” he says.
Renzo Zazzali has seen generations and generations pass through Pico Alto and continues to ride the biggest waves in Peru whenever he can.
He has been surfing for more than 40 years and if there is someone who has stories in giant seas, tubular seas and perfect seas in his country, that someone is him.
Two days ago he shared an unforgettable story of what he considers to be the best wave of his life, which until 2003 was considered the biggest wave ever surfed in Pico Alto.
But above all, Renzo says that “he had never seen the sea so big”, and if he says it, it is because it was gigantic.
Below is the story:
"For the moment that I am out of the serf, I can only remember those glorious moments to return to the water with great strength.
I remember this day in 2003, in Pico Alto. I had never seen the sea so big.
Punta Rocas was closed with Kontiki, El Paso, Pacharacas, Señoritas, Caballeros, El Silencio and Arica. All in a single line.
Costa Verde closed due to tidal surge, in Triángulo 10 boats wrecked on the sand.
It was the first time I saw the Herradura go over the top. The wave literally reached the parking lot.
I picked up Rodolfo Klima and Wawa Parroud (RIP), our goal was Pico Alto.
I entered with my 9'8, a 20-foot pita that Momuna lent me and without a vest.
I felt super safe and connected. I positioned myself 100 meters further inside than everyone else because I knew that the giant was coming in every hour.
I waited very patiently and sure enough, the day's series arrived. I was at the right time and place.
All I had to do was paddle and try to do it no matter what... And so it was!
They say it was the biggest wave ever ridden at Pico Alto up to that time. Some people said it was up to 9 metres high. I would say it was around 7 or 8.
A few years after I had ridden the biggest wave of my life, I was given an award recognizing my title.
Humbly, this became the wave of my life, it served as an example and security for me in life itself.
And so, to always realize that everything is possible.
Well, I hope you liked my story. I write it with a lot of passion and humility. And I know that this "reliving" helps me to gain strength and reconnect with my soulmate. I'll be back for more!
