Samuel Pupo, criticized by Brazilian fans, defends himself on social media

He beat Mateus Herdy who needed a better result in Ericeira: “It's really good when the Brazilian attacks the Brazilian himself,” he said ironically.

Brazilian Samuel Pupo received some heat on social media after winning his quarter-final series at the Ericeira challenger against Mateus Herdy.

Herdy needed two solid results in the remaining stages of the CS: Ericeira and Saquarema and this result leaves him practically alone needing the victory in Saquarema.

When they got out of the water, the surfers greeted each other and that was it. But on social media, they continued. Pupo received the “love” from Herdy’s fans and dedicated a message to them: “It’s really good when the Brazilian attacks the Brazilian. I just surfed, like I’ve been doing all year. I was glad that the waves got better in our heat and we were able to surf… What kind of pro would I be if I “surfed easy” because he’s one of my best friends, I bet he wouldn’t want to win like that. That either.”

“If you thought I deserved to win the series, don’t blame me for that,” he concluded.

The Ericeira challenger defined its semi-finalists today and tomorrow will crown the champions:
SERIES 1: Sally Fitzgibbons (AUS) vs. Noah Klapp (DEU)
SERIES 2: Kirra Pinkerton (USA) vs. Tya Zebrowski (FRA)

Men's semis
SERIES 1: Alejo Muniz (BRA) vs. Callum Robson (AUS)
SERIES 2: Joel Vaughan (AUS) vs. Samuel Pupo (BRA)
