Save The Waves declared Punta Borinquen as the eleventh World Surfing Reserve

The eight kilometres from Crash Boat to Surfers Beach are protected


Save The Waves has chosen Punta Borinquen, in Puerto Rico, as its eleventh World Surfing Reserve, the organization published in its siteThe Punta Borinquen World Surfing Reserve will be eight kilometers of coastline between Crash Boat and Surfers/Survival Beach, home to several world-class wave breaks, which will receive environmental, cultural and economic protection. The reserve is expected to be ready by spring 2019.

This project will be carried out in conjunction with the Olita Foundation, a Puerto Rican non-profit organization that works to help families escape poverty.

The Puerto Rican NGO created a team of experts in the fields of each selection criteria for the reserve. And in turn, this interdisciplinary team formed the Local Management Council (LSC) which is composed of professors, students, local entities, NGOs and local veterans of the surf and outdoor industries.

Punta Borinquen also has its own ambassador, environmental activist Otto Flores.

The World Surfing Reserve is a program promoted by the global non-profit organization, Save The Waves, which seeks to identify and preserve the most outstanding waves in the world and the ecosystem and surfing community that surrounds them.

The previous 10 world surfing reserves are: Manly Beach, Gold Coast and Noosa in Australia, Ericeira in Portugal, Malibu and Santa Cruz in the United States, Todos Santos in Mexico, Punta de Lobos in Chile, Huanchaco in Peru and Guarda do Embaú in Brazil.
