Sebastián Correa and his new video: “I had never ridden right-handers like that in Peru”
The best clip of this discovery in northern Peru exclusively from DUKE for 24 hours and interview with the surfer who really had a very good tubular season
Covid led some of the world's best surfers to find hidden paradises in their own countries. The search became more acute than ever and yielded some very interesting results.
Sebastian Correa was seen surfing one of the best tubes in Nias history, also one of the best between Backdoor and Off the Wall, a couple of seasons ago.
In the midst of the pandemic, one of the best Latin American free surfers par excellence found a replica of his favorite waves in his own country. And he got the most out of it… You can't count the number of barrels he got in this video. He says he had never surfed right-handers like that in his country, but he also says that the wave has its difficulties and is not for everyone.
Below is the interview with the surfer, above is the video that he just released exclusively on DUKE for 24 hours.
The last year gave Peruvians many discoveries, or at least several waves were revealed. You put on the table the best clip of that mini Puerto they have in the north, what can you tell us about that wave?
The truth is that I had never ridden right-handers like that in Peru, from the moment I saw it I knew I was going to ride it all season. It is a mini Puerto that sometimes has four-metre waves, I think this is the beginning of this beach and in the next few years we are going to see some crazy waves. The other thing I can tell you is that it is a very demanding wave, most people who went in didn't catch a good one, I gave it faith all season and it paid off but it is not a wave for everyone. You have to be very patient and pay several ducks to be able to find the rhythm.
Who else did you see surfing it well?
Gabriel Villaran had an incredible rod and an ability to find epic waves, Joaquín Maugere got some great tubes, Gustavo Reategui had a hard time finding the wave but ended up being one of the best there. And Adrian Garcia was the best Backside in fact.
You get like 500 tubes in the clip, was there anything that took away the desire to surf after the quarantine left them out?
Of those 500 tubes I did, I did four times as many ducks or swells (laughs). I was the first to get in the water and the last to get out most of the time. It was like I was on a surf trip in India or Mexico so I took full advantage of it. It wasn't because of the quarantine but because of the quality of the waves.
For you it was a year of professional changes, you launched your own brand, DaHood, leaving a long-time sponsor, how was that process?
It was a very good year for me, I already had in mind to do something of my own and grow as a person and enter the business world. I had already finished my university career and it was time to start. In fact, it was hard for me to change not having a sponsor but now I don't depend on others but on myself.
In the video you introduce the anti-Cabo team. What does this team consist of? Why anti-Cabo?
(Laughs) It's like a joke. We are Joaquin Maugere, Tomas Tudela, Nacho Sarmiento and Adrian Garcia who didn't want to go to Cabo with all the crowd, so we decided to go to T-Land "For The Glory" and leave everyone else in Cabo. Then all the crowd arrived and joined the Team (laughs).
You're having a great time up north, what young talents from there have caught your eye?
There are several, but what draws my attention the most are those who are just starting to surf, they have the desire and motivation to learn like the guys from the Negritos La Brea Surf Association. On the other hand, there are the Ríos, the Lazo, Sol and Ricardo Williams who are making waves.
What are your general plans for 2021?
Looking for good waves in Peru and focusing on DAHOOD!
Do you think you'll be able to travel in 2021? Do you already have plans?
It's a unique opportunity, despite all the travel restrictions, and I want to look on the bright side. I want to explore Peru more and look for good waves at home. I know I can find several waves like these and on my own.
