Last Wednesday, May 3, a surfer was attacked by a shark at the iconic Jeffreys Bay break, just over two months before the start of stage 9 of the world tour, the Corona Open J-Bay.

According to the National Rescue Institute, the shark bit his leg and he was transferred to the hospital in a stable condition and “in good spirits, well cared for” after the incident.

None of the injuries were “life-threatening,” they added.

The famous ninth stop of the tour will take place right there in Jeffreys Bay between July 13 and 22 and it was where Mick Fanning was also attacked during a live broadcast.

A witness said he saw many surfers rushing out of the water after being alerted to what was happening to the man.

Once they knew what was happening, they used the shark bite kit that the National Rescue Institute has on the beach.

By the time paramedics arrived, people had already cut off the man's wetsuit and applied bandages to his wounds.

The Kouga municipality has warned surfers who were trying to enter the water after the accident.

According to The Inertia, The Daily Mail said it was a great white shark.

There has been no statement from the WSL regarding what happened.
