Six surfers to watch out for at the Mar del Plata QS

Three men and three women who have everything to win the southernmost WSL tournament on the calendar

With a good swell approaching, the now classic Easter QS begins next Tuesday in Playa Grande, Mar del Plata. Approximately 100 men and 30 women have already registered on the list published by the WSL.

These six arrive in Mar del Plata on the right foot and play as favorites.

Lele Usuna

Not only is he the home crowd favourite and the top seed in the tournament, but he also comes with the motivation of having lost one last year and having the same thing happen to him at the QS 3000 in Martinique.

The forecast is in his favour. It won't be as epic as last year, but there will be waves for the Argentine to show off his clean and powerful surfing.

Wiggolly Dantas

Until recently, Wiggolly Dantas was a solid member of the CT with performances that made any favourite tremble. He faltered last season and this led him to return to the hard path of the QS.

His surfing mixes power with modernity, which gives him the versatility needed for a stage like Mar del Plata, which can have good waves at the beginning and then not so good. He has the experience to stand out and return to the CT in Argentina.

Sebastian Correa

Sebastian Correa is known to be a big wave surfer, but what is perhaps less well known is that his small wave game is just as strong. Photo: WSL

Motivated to enter the Volcom Pipe Pro to surf Banzai with three other people in the water, Sebastián Correa decided to compete in as many nearby QSs as he could to achieve a high enough ranking to allow him to enter the tournament.

What Correa has that many ignore is that his game in small and medium waves is strong and modern. He is used to surfing the waves of the small docks that are similar to some days of Biology.

Like Usuna, he is motivated after losing his home QS two weeks ago in San Bartolo.

Mimi Barona

Mimi Barona headed for victory in Mar del Plata last year. If everything continues as it has been, she will repeat the dish and if Yacht's right-handers break, the chances are greater. Photo: WSL

If anyone is coming with the wind in their shirt for this tournament, that someone is Ecuadorian Mimi Barona. She won three international events in less than two weeks, the QS in San Bartolo and the two ALAS in Galapagos.

If the event takes place on the Yacht's rights, or any right with a bit of strength, it will be difficult to beat.

Against her, if you will, is the pressure of coming with the status of favourite. We will have to see how she handles it.

Sofia Mulanovich

The only WSL world champion from Latin America announced her return to competition and she is surfing well, she is focused and she is training hard. When this happens, it is dangerous.

Sofia competes very well and makes every second of a series count, it is very difficult to beat her. Before the tournament even starts, it is certain that she will finish in the top five. And win? It is very possible, as has been said: She is in a very dangerous stage for anyone who faces her.

Ornella Pellizzari

The most successful surfer in the history of Argentine surfing, gained confidence with her victory at the Pan American Games in Punta Rocas three months ago, was on the cover of the local magazine, Surfista, and is on the rise.

She lacks recent international experience, but makes up for it with the enormous talent she always had. It will be interesting to see her deal with the pressure of being one of the favorites in this QS.
