Sofia Mulanovich: “I am very hurt because it has not been easy to achieve what I achieved”
“I think that spot is mine and they are taking it out of my hands without any explanation,” says the defending ISA world champion in a video posted on her social networks
In a video posted on her Instagram, current ISA World Champion, former WSL and ISA World Champion, Sofía Mulanovich expressed her disappointment at not being a guaranteed part of the Peruvian team that will be at the ISA World Surfing Games in El Salvador 2021.
According to the surfer in the text of the post, she took her place for granted because she had been working as part of the Peruvian Sports Institute's program with a view to Tokyo 2021: “Lima 2019 gave out 'provisional' places to be revalidated at the 2021 ISA World Cup, in this context if at the 2021 ISA World Cup, two Peruvian men finish above Lucca and in the qualification zone, it would strip Lucca of his classification.
Both Daniella and Lucca have already been selected to validate and defend their place. In that same sense, wouldn't it be logical for me to also be selected to defend my title?
And I think that was the criterion of the previous working group since I was included in the IPD Tokyo 2020 Program, with which I have been training since last year. I simply do not understand the change of mind of the new Fenta," writes the Peruvian.
In the video, Sofia is visibly emotional and says: “I am very hurt because it has not been easy to achieve what I achieved (…) I think that spot is mine and they are taking it out of my hands without any explanation.”
The new Fenta board of directors announced the names of the preselected athletes who will compete to be part of the team that will travel to El Salvador to compete in the ISA World Championships where the last places to go to Tokyo 2021 are at stake.
It mentions that Daniella Rosas and Lucca Mesinas are already guaranteed and that they will fight for four places (two men and two women).
Sofia understood that by being on the IPD Tokyo 2020 program she was already part of the team; in fact, she had already given interviews assuming her place there, presenting her boards for El Salvador and talking about her plans there.
According to what DUKE has investigated, there is no regulation that places Mulanovich in the Peruvian team for El Salvador, nor is there one for Mesinas or Rosas to be there.
According to the statements and presentations on social media, the appeal is that Rosas and Mesinas can defend their place in Tokyo (because if two Peruvians are placed in the qualifying zone, they are left out of the Olympics). And, in the case of Mulanovich, the appeal is to what is established by the IPD and to the honor that comes with defending a title.
