Peruvian Sofia Mulanovich surfs well and competes well. There's a reason, of course, for she was world champion and twice runner-up. Today in South Africa, in a tournament full of young athletes hungry for results and in waves that didn't go beyond half a metre, the veteran dominated the QS 1.000 Ballito Pro with surfing and intelligence.

She beat Australian Philippa Anderson in the final, Japanese Shino Matsuda in the semi-finals and former CT Chelsea Tuach and Zoe McDougall in round 3 and won all the heats she participated in, surfing with incredible solidity. The lowest combined score of her event was 9,25 in round 2, then she scored 11,25, 11,75, 13,90 and 14,00.

In the grand final, Australian Anderson was primarily looking for a 6,4, which she was never able to achieve.

The 1.000 points from the result become her best score of the year, replacing a 280 (her worst result) and reaching a total of 3300 that places her in the top 50 of the QS.

For her part, Costa Rican Leilani McGonagle also obtained a very good result, placing third, losing in the semis to Phillipa Anderson.

Mulanovich had not won a QS tournament since late 2016 when she won the 1500 in Pichilemu.

Sofia's trip to South Africa was a very rewarding one: In addition to surfing epic JBay and getting to know the local flora and fauna, she achieved the two best results of the season. She arrived in 104th place and left in the top 50. All photos: WSL/Thurtell
