Sol Aguirre and her wildcard selection: “I feel very happy, very motivated.”

"I'm really focused and having this chance is another opportunity to give my best and seek that spot in the CT," she said in an interview with DUKE

Peruvian Sol Aguirre received the South American wildcard for the CS, a huge prestige for the Peruvian who did not make it into the qualifying zone this season but was recognized for her impeccable career and was therefore selected to compete in the CT.

Sol's name has surfaced on more than one occasion when it comes to awarding her wildcards, such as when she competed in the Rio de Janeiro CT where she almost beat Carissa Moore.

There are five stages ahead in which it will be all-out to be in the top 7 that qualifies for the CT (with the expansion of quotas).

Sol, who has always been known as a talented singer among her friends, decided to release her first single, "Present Time," this year. It already has nearly 21.000 streams on Spotify; this was also discussed in the following interview:

How do you feel about the wildcard?
I feel very happy, very motivated, and I'm super focused. Having this opportunity is another chance to give my all and seek that spot for the CT. It's incredible, and I'm super motivated to achieve it this year.

What do you think was key to getting the wildcard?
My great results throughout my career, I qualified for the Olympics, I went to them, I finished fifth in the world at the World Surfing Games in Puerto Rico, third in the world at the WSL Junior World Championships, I won a QS event in South America and I finished 35th in the challengers... It's been a good year for me and I think all of that deserves to be given the opportunity.

Last year you finished 35th in the rankings. What are you going to do differently to get into the qualifying zone this time?
“All in,” without a doubt, that’s the plan.

You recently released your first song... How is your singing career progressing and how do you combine it with professional surfing?
My career isn't as a singer. This was a single born out of a love of surfing and my travels, and it turned out really well. My career is professional surfing.

How do I combine it? For me, surfing and music are very similar; you have to have a deep connection with life and nature and be present. So, for me, writing songs isn't an added pressure because it's something I love, and through surfing, which inspires me, I can do it for the love of music and my sport.

So, it's something that adds to my life, it keeps me entertained on my travels. Besides, I can surf... There's a great balance between those two things. However, it must be emphasized that my profession is surfing, and my priority is 100%.

If you were offered a multi-million dollar record deal and had to give up surfing to accept it, what would you do?
No… I definitely can't quit surfing… So I'd have to figure out how to accept that multi-million dollar contract and keep surfing and competing, because anything is possible.

Sun in surfing magazines and Sun on Spotify, why not?
