Sol Aguirre is the new two-time South American youth champion of the WSL
Argentine Catalina Mercere won the stage and by leaving Peruvian Daniella Rosas in second, gave the title to the local from Lobitos. Two Peruvians will go to the world championship
Peruvian Sol Aguirre has just been crowned two-time South American youth champion after her compatriot Daniella Rosas lost the grand final of the Sao Chico Eco Festival in the waves of Santa Catarina, Brazil.
If she won, the victory would remain with her, but if she lost, Aguirre would repeat the title she won last year in Santa Catarina. As Rosas was ultimately unable to beat the inspired Argentine Catalina Mercere who scored 11,33, better than her 9,67, the title went to Lobitos.
Both Rosas and Aguirre secured the two South American spots for the WSL Junior World Championships to be held in December in Taiwan (More information about this here).
Mercere's victory is the first ever by an Argentine, male or female, in a WSL event on Brazilian soil, the second on the pro junior circuit since Lucía Indurain won in Mar del Plata in 2015.
“With effort and dedication, everything can be achieved,” Mercere wrote on her Instagram. She added: “(I am) very happy to have won the Pro Junior in Sao Francisco do Sul. Very grateful to all those who supported me, to my family without whom I could not have come here, and to my sponsors.”
Final result:
1- Catherine Mercere
2- Daniella Rosas
3- Sol Aguirre and Taina Hinckel
5- Maju Freitas, Julia Duarte, Isabela Saldanha and Rafaella Texeira
