The title of the traditional Boardmasters, QS 1.000 held annually at Fistral Beach, Newquay, England, was won by the Spaniard Andy Criere who throughout the last five days displayed powerful and fluid surfing in a consistent manner.

Criere defeated Japanese Daiki Tanaki in the final by 14,60 to 11,50. The 1.000 points from his victory were his best result of the year and catapulted him from 163rd to 113th place.

“In addition to being the best birthday present, this is the dream start to the European leg of the World Surf League,” wrote the Basque, who turned 23 last week, on his Instagram.

The Italian-Costa Rican Angelo Bonomelli, who was already runner-up in this event, placed third. Also outstanding were the Canarian Luis Díaz and the Chilean Roberto Araki who placed fifth.

In the women's division the champion of the event was the French Juliette Lacome, in men's longboard the also French Edouard Delpero and in women's longboard the Filipino Aping Agudo.
