Surfing is now possible in Mar del Plata starting this Friday

A seven-day pilot plan will be implemented, if all goes well, surfing will be legal again in the sports capital of Argentina

After more than 100 days of prohibition, surfing will be legally possible tomorrow in Mar del Plata, the president of the Argentine Surfing Association, Alfredo Tórtora, informed DUKE.

“We did it,” Tórtora told DUKE, adding: “The mayor’s decree has already been signed, it is a seven-day pilot test, if everything goes well, it will continue.”

The authority specified that the measure was taken after the creation of an economic activation commission that had been created to encourage all these activities. At around 12 noon today, the document submitted by the commission was approved by the mayor.

“Surfers can surf from 8 a.m. to 17 p.m. and can move between different points in the city,” said the president of the ASA.

Mar del Plata was one of the cities in the world with the longest surfing ban. There were several instances of negotiation that were denied by the government of the province of Buenos Aires.

The fact that four surfers were allowed to return legally also marked a turning point in the entire process, which generated differences in the Argentine surfing community.

There are five active cases in the city, which is far from the situation in Buenos Aires, which has 36500 confirmed cases and 650 deaths.
