Surfer attacked by shark was saved by her husband who chased the animal away by hitting it

“It was a tremendous act of bravery,” said one of the lifeguards who responded to the scene in Port Macquarie, Australia.

Another shark attack on a surfer took place in New South Wales.

A surfer narrowly escaped death Saturday in Port Macquarie, Australia, after a great white shark bit her leg and her husband, alerted to what was happening, attacked the animal to scare it away.

The woman was taken to hospital with deep cuts to her leg but is in stable condition after being treated at two hospitals, several Australian media reported.

"The shark was attached to my leg and I just jumped in," Mark Rapley, the husband, told the Sunday Telegraph, adding that he did what anyone else would do.

Witness Jed Toohey said the animal could have dragged the woman into the sea if it had not been for her husband's actions.

The woman underwent surgery on her leg and according to the update given yesterday, Sunday, her condition was stable.

“The shark wouldn’t let go and the surfer paddled out from the side and jumped on the shark and punched it to finally get it to let go,” said New South Wales lifeguard Steven Pearce. “It was a tremendous act of bravery.”

“We’ve had some tragic attacks in the area over the last few years so to step out of your comfort zone to attack a big shark is incredible,” he said.

This is the third serious attack on the state's north coast in recent months, with five attacks in Australian waters so far in 2020.
