In what sounds like a story straight out of a movie, an Australian surfer says he fought a shark to death yesterday on the right-handers at Lennox Head in New South Wales, Australia.

Three prestigious Australian newspapers have already reported on the event: The Daily Telegraph, The Bulletin and the Northern Star, and was reported by the specialist media Stab.

According to Matthew Lee, he was surfing at the well-known right-hand point near the rocks before 7am when the shark hit him.

According to him, following his instinct, instead of retreating, he attacked: “I grabbed the damn thing,” he says, and hit it against the rocks of the spot until the shark died.

"Thinking about it now, it seems like the stupidest thing to grab, but at the time I thought if I grabbed it, I'd know exactly where its mouth was," he explained.

The surfer said he sat on the rocks for half an hour and then went surfing again, but the experience made him think and he ended up leaving the water to go fishing.

According to Lee himself, his friends do not believe his story, even when he shows the photo of him with the bloody shark. He said that this was taken by another surfer who went into the water with his son.

“Maybe I should have done like Mick Fanning and just punched him in the nose,” he said. “No one will believe this, unless it shows up on video.”

However, authorities have closed several beaches in the area due to the abundance of sharks in the Lennox area.

He also clarified that he has no relation to another surfer of the same name who was attacked in 2015 and suffered serious injuries to his legs.
