51-year-old surfer Gerry Gilhool died Saturday after colliding with another surfer while surfing at the classic central California break called Rincon, several local media reported.

Gilhool apparently collided with a surfer who was paddling out, but the impact did not appear to be that violent, he and Santa Barbara Noozhawk explained.

Other surfers carried him to shore and a nurse performed first aid on him on the beach until the ambulance arrived.

Captain Victor Medina reported that he was taken to Community Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead from head injuries.

Meanwhile, the other surfer, still unidentified, was also taken to hospital with head and nose injuries.
