A 30-year-old surfer died after a shark attack on Sunday at Emerald Beach, Coffs Harbour, Australia, local media reported.

The shark bit the surfer on the arm and although a security alert was activated, including the transfer by helicopter, the injuries were so serious that they could not save him.

As a result of the incident, the city closed Shelly Beach, Emerald Beach and Serenity Beach for 48 hours.

Inspector Ben Atkinson said incidents like this had a particular impact on the surfing community. He added that there were a lot of people surfing for Father's Day and the death had left a "heavy" atmosphere over the town.

Beach local Aaron Armstrong told Australia's ABC News that this was the first attack on the beach in 20 years.
