Surfer found alive after 30 hours lost at sea

He went surfing at Surfers Beach, Puerto Rico, and when he didn't return, a missing person report was filed; a helicopter found him on a nearby reef.

A 68-year-old surfer was found alive and in fairly good health after being lost at sea in Puerto Rico for 30 hours after going surfing and not being seen.

The daughter of the unidentified man filed the complaint along with the landlord of the Surfers Beach Airbnb in Aguadilla.

After 30 a.m., the United States Coast Guard spotted a man on a reef near the beach matching the descriptions.

Since it was not possible to reach him by boat, he was airlifted by helicopter and rescued safely.

The conversation with the daughter was recorded and shared via the coast guard's Twitter account.

“What a fantastic outcome!” said Captain Robert Stiles, deputy commandant of Coast Guard Sector San Juan and coordinator of the search and rescue mission in this case. “We activated the interagency search and rescue effort as soon as we received the information, especially when we realized that more than 24 hours had passed. It was a true team effort, and I appreciate the responsiveness and professionalism of Coast Guard Air Station Borinquen, the Sector San Juan Command Center, and our local emergency services. This case could easily have had a different outcome. We urge all mariners and anyone entering the water to have a plan, communicate their intentions to someone, and use the appropriate life-saving equipment.”
