Uruguayan surfing will return to competitions in September with events in both divisions, the Uruguayan Surfing Union has just announced in a press release.
“Dear surfing community of Uruguay, we are pleased to inform you that, thanks to the approval of the National Secretariat of Sports, we will be starting the circuits of all categories next month, with the corresponding health protocol,” the note says.
They report that there will be a first and second division, with the latter holding qualifying events in Canelones, Maldonado and Rocha.
"We are going to hold two events per region between now and the end of the year and close with the promotion final in December, if possible, and in the worst case in January of next year," they added.
They also announced that there will be three events for juniors, longboards and masters (+35).
“We confirm that we will have 2020 champions in all the competitive categories governed by the Uruguayan Surfing Union,” he concludes.
This is the first country in the Americas to hold a national event since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Uruguay has recorded 202 active cases as of today, with just over 1100 infections and around 30 deaths.
